Making Proud Choices: A New Path to Informed and Confident Futures for Youth

In early fall 2023, Baraza La Afrika (BLA) began a unique partnership with educators at Planned Parenthood. Initially referred to Planned Parenthood for support with puberty and anatomy lessons, this connection evolved into a collaboration that introduced the Making Proud Choices! program, an 8-hour, evidence-based curriculum designed to empower teens. The program covered essential topics such as goal setting, building healthy relationships, effective communication, birth control options, abstinence, and STI prevention—addressing subjects often avoided within families due to cultural or generational differences.

BLA’s youth, aged 12-16, engaged actively throughout the sessions, from lively basketball trivia games to shared Starbucks runs, creating an environment rich in laughter, learning, and thought-provoking discussions. This welcoming atmosphere allowed participants to absorb important life skills while feeling supported and understood. At the program’s end, each participant received a $100 gift card in recognition of their dedication and course completion.

The feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive. Many expressed a desire for the program to continue, noting that the sessions were not only educational but also enjoyable and engaging. Several youth shared that the program provided a safe space to explore topics they might hesitate to discuss with their parents, such as relationships and sexual health.

Baraza La Afrika leaders observed youth using correct terminology and sharing medically accurate information. One parent even thanked the organizers for connecting his son with such a valuable program, noting his son’s enjoyment and the benefit of the knowledge and skills gained. The bond between students and the instructor became a standout feature of the program, fostering a respectful, open learning environment where youth felt encouraged to ask difficult questions and be heard.
